Hot Aisle
August 2015

In response to a number of questions we have been receiving from Data Center Managers and IT heads, we are pleased to introduce ‘HOT AISLE FAQs’, an interactive section where our readers can send in any questions they have with respect to IT Infrastructure Management & Monitoring. These will be answered in the subsequent issues.

Q. Why should we take 3 phase power to rack?

A. If the load on the rack is around 7KVA or going to increase to it in a the next couple of years then there are many reasons why this should be done.
  • Cost of a single 3 phase cable is cheaper than 3 single phase cables – as also the thickness of a 408V cable is less than a 208V cable
  • Creates less clutter in cabling in the DC thereby management is easier
  • A 16Amp 3 phase delivers about 11KVA to the rack compared to 4.3KVA with single phase 16Amp. This allows 2.5 times more compute load / rack
  • A 3phase to the rack allows for high density racks which reduces the reality costs over a period of time.
The deployment can happen by installing 3 ph intelligent PDU at the rack which then provides single phase current to the devices.

Keep your Data Center Switched On with the Right Transfer Switch

Uninterrupted power supply is essential for any datacentre as even the slightest of disruption can cause irreparable damage to network systems and equipment. Given the criticality of power, datacentres’ equipment, specially legacy computers and networks, with single source of power are faced with greater challenge while changing from primary to secondary power during outages. The right transfer switch enables a smooth transition within the quickest time span ensuring no downtime.

7 Ways to Kill Data Center Efficiency

Research finds that over 30% of data center servers are chronically idle or comatose. These seven factors are making your data center inefficient. Considering the constant pressure on IT budgets and the "green IT" push that's been going on over the past decade, you would think that IT would have its act together when it comes to identifying and resolving data center inefficiencies.

The usage of an air economizer reduces data center power consumption. It enables cooler outdoor air temperatures to cool the hardware and facility. In a data center set up, instead of cooling and recirculating the hot air from servers, air economizers draw in cool air from outside and expel hot air generated inside to outdoors.
