India’s data centre industry holds a promising future. The launches and expansions are now just numbers and show no signs of a pause. Experts say the actual growth may be yet to begin. India accounts for roughly 14 to 15% of global internet users, whereas data center is only 6%, leaving a huge gap there. India is fast emerging as a data center hub with the explosion of data. In this story, experts from NTT, CapGemini, CBRE, Microsoft and many others share their opinions on what is driving this growth and prospects for the data center industry in India in the coming years.

In the dynamic landscape of India’s digital transformation, the role of edge data centers has emerged as a critical enabler for the country’s burgeoning digital economy. Anjani Kommisetti, Country Manager, India and SAARC, Raritan and Servertech, opines that the rise of edge data centers is changing how India uses digital technology and is making advanced IT accessible to everyone not just in big cities but also in smaller towns and it will enhance user experience for latency-sensitive applications like video streaming, gaming, and augmented/virtual reality.

With more than 100 data centers in 20 countries around the world, NTT is constantly thinking about new ways to create efficiency and better utilize the energy and improve the way we work for our clients and the environment.

Center Stage

India has seen a remarkable surge in the use of social media, digital entertainment, and digital commerce. As of right now, the nation has more than 80 third-party data centers, bringing the overall number to more than 130. This figure is expected to rise further as India is working towards achieving its objective of becoming a fully functional digital economy. The government of India is developing a data centre policy to attract investments and increase the country's current rate of data centre expansion. Along with the establishment of data centre economic zones and Data Centre Facilitation Units (DCFU), the incorporation of data centres under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA), and the development of a distinct category code for data centres under the National Building Code of India are all included in this plan. India will be a key hub for the expansion of data centres over the coming ten years since it has the capacity to adopt the multi-cloud era quickly.

QUICK TIP

Power supply failures are a leading cause of server failure. Additionally, most power supplies don't fail overnight but degrade over time. One key indicator of a degrading power supply is a declining power factor (PF). The PX3-5000 PDU series meters at each outlet. This metering monitors the power factor of each server. Most modern power supplies are rated for 85% (0.85 PF) or higher efficiency. Thus, setting a lower warning threshold for every outlet in use for a PF of 0.75 and a lower critical threshold for a PF of 0.65 can provide you with a pre-emptive alert to an impending power supply failure. This alert can allow you valuable time to investigate and, if necessary, proactively turn the power supply off in a controlled scenario before an unexpected server outage occurs. This early alert can potentially help you to prevent a larger scale outage at the rack. Lastly, a degrading power supply over time consumes more power than average and can deprive power from other servers. To know more:

Intelligent Asset Tags & Sensors

Intelligent asset management automates it asset tracking to help you better understand exactly what you have and where it’s located, down to 1U. Raritan’s Asset Management Tags (AMTs) and Asset Management Sensors (AMSs) provide data center operators with an accurate, automated, real-time inventory of all IT assets and their locations, down to the 1U level. Each tag and sensor integrates with DCIM software to easily track assets, determine capacity in a number of areas, and manage adds, moves, or changes.
